THE MAORI WARS.
To the Editor. ' Sir, —At the banquet recently given to the veterans the reference to flags captured in the Maori war seems to have created some interest, I have been supplied with some information on the subject, but I would be glad to note any particulars that can be furnished 'by any of your numerous readers. At the attack on the L pa, Waitara, where the first flag was taken by George Leth'bridge, of the Mounted Volunteers, and John 'Sarten. of the same corps, fell mortally wounded ill his attempt for the flag, an incident might be mentioned which has probably been almost forgotten, or remembered by only a few now remaining alive." That is the conduct of two Taranaki men-Jack Phillips and John Hawke—who'were driving bullocks drawing the "big guns." After the affair was over, they were addressed by Colonel Sillery, who patted one of them on the shoulder, and said, "My lads, you did not seem to realise the danger you have been in. Your coolness and courage must 'be rewarded. You can have either a sword, revolver or a commission." They decided for revolvers, as being most useful to them, and subsequently were duly presented each with a revolver suita'bly engraved. It would be interesting to trace and procure these two revolvers, if possible, and have them here, as being presented for valor, while engaged with British troops. They should be of equal value to a Victoria Cross. In addition to the two mounted volunteers mentioned above (Sarten and Lethbridge) another of the same corps was slightly wounded, but his modesty prevented him from making any fuss at the time, and only a few knew that he was hit. It will thus be seen that of the few colonials present at that engagement when the first shot of the Maori war was fired, five of them distinguished themselves.—l am, etc., J.'C. DA VIES. South road.
