RAID ON BOOKMAKERS
OVER EIGHTY ARRESTS. By Telegraph—Press Asseeiatien. Auckland, Last Night. Four detachments of police raided certain premises in Vulcan lane, Coombes* Arcade and the British Buildings, this afternoon, and detained all the persons therein on charges of being found in common gaming houses. It is well known that the introduction of gaming legislation made the bookmaker's business illegal, but a number of men who were formerly licensed still carry on a flourishing business. The raids were the result of months of observation, and proved a great success, no warning of the intentions of the police being given. The police considered that they held sufficient evidence to warrantee raids, and the result was that nearly eighty persons were arrested. The arrested persons were conveyed to the police station and there brought before justices of the peace. This principals were released in bonds of .€2OO each, and those found on the premises in bonds of £lO each. The persons concerned will appear in court to-morrow. Tin.' proceedings have create a sensation in the city.
