In the tennis tournament New South Wales defeated Victoria by 137 fames to 82. ° AUCKLAND v. TARANAKI. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The North Island inter-association championships began on Saturdav and were resumed to-day. Auckland and Taranaki met to decide the premiership of the North Island. In the men's singles Wallace (Taranaki) beat Dr. Keith (Auckland). , In the ladieef doubles, Misses Gray and Cumming (Auckland)' boat Misses Powdrell and Brewster, (5-1, 0-2. In the ladies' singles, Miss Powdrell, after a stubborn fight, beat Miss Gray, 0-2, 4-0, 0-1. Auckland made a much better show than expected, and with the combined doubles still to be played each province has <5 wins to its credit. Auckland, Last Night. The_ North Island inter-association championship tournament was concluded at the Eden and Epsom courts this afternoon, when Auckland defeated Taranaki by 18 sets to 17. Each team secured eight matches, but the rules provide that when the points are even the contest must be decided by the team having won the greatest number of sets. Four combined doubles were decided today. - Two were unfinished from Saturday last, but it was agreed to start them again from the beginning. The follow-' ing are the detailed results:—Combined doubles: Miss Powdrell and Wallace beat Miss Gray and Dr. Keith, 8-0, 8-4; Miss 1 Brewster' and Dickie beat Mrs. Cooper and' Quinnell, 8-0. 0-4 Mrs. Van Ash and 1 Wvbourne lost to Miss Cumming and Mr. W. A. Brown, 2-0, 3-6; Miss Simp-i son and Webster lost to Miss Steed and Robson. 3-G, 2-0; total points—Auckland, eight matches, 18 sets; Taranaki, eight matches, 17 sets. Wanganui, Last Night. At the Wanganui lawn tennis championships to-day Miss Simpson won the ladies' championship singles, Mrs. Hesse j and Miss Cave won the doubles, Gregg I won the men's handicap singles. Hedditeh and Crawsliaw the men's handicap doubles, and 'Mrs. Gordon and Mrs. Jones the ladies' handicap doubles. The tournament will be concluded to-morrow.
