A TRAGIC DEATH.

A tragic death was that of Mrs. Jeanette Williams, ns the result of a fire at her flat in Great Eastern street, Stratford (England). The old lady, who was the widow of a former dean of Grahamstown, South Africa, was eccentric, lived alone, and although possessing considerable means, kept no servant. She married Dean William* 4fl years ago. when he was a vicar in Gloucestershire. After he died she took up ostrich farming, and was very successful until the Boer War v broke out, when she suffered severe losses. She was a. daughter of Mr. Samuel Gael, a well-known writer on legal subjects.

Tn the New York Medical Journal Dr. J. Knott says; "Tn spite of the materialistic tendency of modern science, music still has a place in the art of medicine The phenomena of perfectly healthv ani mal existence are guided by rhythmic laws of repetition. The value of musi" as a power in the social and political life of nations and communities, as well as in the aesthetic and temperamental condition and feelings of the individual, has been more or less highly estimated and applied in all parts of the world. The power of musi"* in awakening the emotions is exemplified in the effect of martial strains."
