CHASED BY AN OSTRICH.
I M.P.'s EXCITING ADVENTURE IX SOUTH AFRICA. London, February 14. An -exciting adventure with an ostrich was experienced by Sir Joseph Walton,' M.P. for Barnsley, during his tour in South Africa. He was visiting Caesar's Camp, outside Ladysmith, when lie found that a large cock ostrich was pursuing him , "Knowing that my only chance of escape was to lie flat on my face, or get on an elevation," says Sir Joseph, "I made quickly for the laager (thrown up during the siege) and mounted the wall. "I went round the walls oi the laager, hoping to shake him off, but he followed steadily yard by yard, awaiting his opportunity. "At last I signalled to my carriage, and when it was between me and the ostridh I leaped off the laager and bolted into the carriage. We drove off, followed a long way by the bird." On the previous Sunday the same ostrich knocked two officers down, and they had to lie on the ground face downwards while the savage bird danced on them from time to time.
