RAILWAY STRIKE IN CANADA. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Ottawa, April 3. Six thousand railway construction workers in British Columbia have struck work. In the interior several armed attacks*were made on those still working. Special forces of police have 1 * been despatched to preserve order. THE LITHGOW STRIKE. Sydney, April 4. A section of the Lithgow strikers strongly oppose the settlement, and an aggregate meeting has been called to decide whether it is acceptable. VICTORIAN COAL. Melbourne, April 4. 'The .State coal mine at Wonthaggi has ceased .work as the result of the abolition of the second shift and the fixing of a hewing rate unacceptable to the miners. FEMALE LABOR. Received 5, 12.10 a.m. Adelaide, April 4. The Shortage of Labor Commission recommends the importation of 610 women for different trades, and twenty tailors. It is of opinion that no female factory operatives should be imported unless guaranteed a minimum wage of 27s 6d weekly. EMPLOYMENT OF STRIKERS. Brisbane, April 4. The Government has adopted the recommendations of the Board of Enquiry re employing strikers, but on no account will loyal men be interfered with. THE MELBOURNE COAL STRIKE. Received 5, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, April 5. The trouble in the State coal mine has left a thousand workers idle.
