OXFORD V. CAMBRIDGE.
A SENSATIONAL RACE. DECLARED VOID. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 31, 5.5 p.m. London, March 30. A strong westerly wind prevailed for the boat race and the water was choppy. Oxford won the toss and took the Surrey side. They got quickly to work and led by half a length, which was increased to five lengths at Harrod'e, where Cambridge swamped. Some of the crew swam ashore, and others were rescued by boats. Oxford continued steadily through the water, but sank opposite Chiswick. The crew swam ashore, emptied their boat, re-embarked, and paddled steadily to Mortlake, finishing in 29 minutes. The race was declared void.
Received 1, 12.15 a.m. London, March 30. Cambridge had the outer position and felt the heavy weather earlier. They shipped water shortly after the start, and after rowing a mile dropped out of the race, the boat gradually sinking and rounding Harrod's awash. The crew went overboard. Oxford hugged the •shore, gradually filling. They pulled ashore at Chiswick and emptied the boat and resumed again. They were waterlogged at the finish. The crew had a severe gruelling. The referee declared it no race owing to others than the crew having helped Oxford to bail the boat at Chiswick. The race will be re-rowed on Monday.
