An unsuccessful attempt was made at Rock Island to assassinate the Mayor Mr. Chriever, bullets b.ing fired through the windows of the City Hall. A squabble arose recently between the Mayor and the editor of the local paper. The citizens took sides, and the quarrel culminated in the mob attacking the police station. A general riot broke out, and the police fired and killed one man, injuring several others. The mob then attacked the jail and endeavored to release imprisoned strikers, but wers driven off after charges by the police. The National Guard was ordered out.

The Mayor incurred the enmity of the newspaper editor by attempting to clean the city of undesirables.
