APPLICATION FOR A SCHOOL
VOGELTOWN PETITION. As directed by the' Education Board, the chairman (Mr. 11. Trimble) and. the chief inspector (Mr. W. A. Ballantyne) reported;, at yesterday's meeting of the I board on the application, by petition, of a number of Vogeltown residents for the establishment of a school in their midst. We made a careful examination of the locality, and went as far as the Carrington School, and find that the settlement round Vogeltown has increased very rapidly during the last few years, while much of the farm land is being cut up into town allotments, so that at no very distant date it will be imperative that a school should be established in the neighborhood, whilst if a site is not acquired soon it may be difficult to obtain one in a suitable position. We examined i two site« which can be obtained at pre-1 sent, one on Smith Road, the other near I the corner of Carrington and Brooklands! roads. The site on Smith Road is fur-, ther from the Central School than the I one near Brooklands Road, is nearer to | what appears likelv to be the centre of j the settlement, and will probably draw, when the road is opened, children from Frankleigh and as yet there is no settlement In the vicinity of the Carrington and Brookkndfl Roads. After full consideration we recommend that if the site on Smith Road can be acquired, a side school, under the control of the Central School, taking children up to Standard TV, be established. Ultimately, no doubt, all the standards would have to •. be admitted to thi« school, especially if the road from F- -ikleigh Park should be opened. Assv 'ng that the list of children supplied by Mr. Browne is correct, there will be about fifty to attend when the school is first opened. According to Mr. Ballantyne. in less ; than a year's time there would be seventv or eighty children attending the Vogeltown school if one was established, and they would then be in a position to have a highly qualified teacher. Some discussion took place on Mr'. Kennedy proposing that the school should be limited to Standard Til, instead of Standard TV as proposed in the report. Ultimately the board decided, on Mr. | Morton's motion, to adopt the report and make application to the Department for a grant for the erection of a school aHd the purchase of a site.
