DISTRICT NEWS

TIKORANGT. (From Our Own Corrwpondent.) The cricket match, New Plymouth v. Tikorangi,- was "the" attraction at the cricketers' picnic held here last week, and which was in every way a great success. Races for tire children, sheepguessing, and a bounteous spread a!l went to make an enjoyable day, and although the local men suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the townsmen, it was taken in the true cricketers' spirit, which resognises that to meet better men is good discipline for any club. It is pleasing to note the revival of cricket in the district, for it is an undoubted fact that there is something in the good old game which brings out the best sporting iiinli;:iLo 01 a man and the courtly behaviour of opponents to one another is a' marked contrast to the "pointing" which, unfortunately, too often characterises soae of our national games. The Ngatimaru Ladies' Hockey Club hold their annual meeting at Die hall on Tuesday evening. After the routine business is disposed of there is to be a banquet "fit for the gods," but unfortunately they are to be barred, as it is strictly a "hen convention," at which music, speech and song will harmoniously How for some hours. On behalf of the "Daily News" I have humbly craved permission to attend and take a few notes, but, so far, my efforts have been met with a most uncompromising refusal. The mystery- hanging over the proposed proaeedings and the intense desire displayed by some of our gallants to obtain admission have been heightened by a vigorous slaughter in certain poultry yards, and also by the reported arrival in the district of sundry cas?s which are said to contain "soda-water." One misogynist has confidentially informed me that at a "hen convention," which he declares may be likened to sauerkraut without the cabbage, everyone is talking and nobody listening, but then as I know he U only angry because he couldn't get in, I therefore do not believe him and consider it a libel: However, having a friend who has "a way wid him," I do not despair of being able to provide at least a Hansardised report of the proceedings.
