Some gullible people in a southern township were nicely taken down a few days ago. An elderly canvasser struck the town, his stock-in-trade being a hatpin and a bicycle wheel, also a very persuasive tongue. The wheel had on it a common rubber tyre, blown up tight aud hard, and the canvasser introduced himself by sticking the hat-pin in the tyre. He followed this up >by producing nails and tack*, with which he performed the same feat. The tyre remained hard and tight, and ho explained that this was due to a pink powder, which was poured through the valve into the inner tube, and which automatically closed up all punclitns. He found a ready sale for the powder nt 2s per tin. After he had departed, the powder was largely used, and now there may be seen in a local cycle dealer's shop a bundle of useless imiiier tubes. The wonderful pink powder not only destroyed the solution which held oil the patches, but, in some cases, even ate its way through the tube at the place where the valve is joined to the rubber. And now a cordial invitation is ofltred to the peripatetic gentleman aforesaid to pay a return visit and await the welcome in store for him.
