WAITARA NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) A special meeting of the Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening for the purpose of appointing a clerk ot works and inspector to the Waitara bridge. There were present: Crs. Tate, Black, Elliot, and Langman. Cr. Tate presided. The chairman suggested that as there were only four members of the council present applications be held over until the next ordinary meeting of the council, and a motion to that effect was carried, Cr. Elliot objecting. The s.s. Manukau, which was stranded on the south beach near the entrance to the river some days ago while being towed off by the Tainui on Thursday night capsized, and it was thought that she might be patched up and successfully floated, but Friday's tide decided her fate, The vessel was again washed] up on the beach, and is now lying bottom up. The N.Z.S. Co.'s Otalci is at present loading in the roadstead. There is a large cargo of frozen meat tallow, and wool for shipment.
