UPPER MAXGOREI. (Frirn Our Own Correspondents). The annual picnic of the Upper Mangorei school was held on Friday. The spot chosen (Captain Balsom's pretty homestead) could not have been improved upon, the thick bush providing splendid shelter from the heat of the sun, thus enabling the old as well as the young folk to enjoy themselves to the full. The picnic proved a decided success, and was well attended by the parents and scholars, many coming from a distance. Refreshments were provided by the parents, and altogether the children had an enjoyable time. During the afternoon several prizes were presented by the chairman of the school committee (Mr. Cooper) to the pupils for good conduct and discipline. Towards evening the parents and children wended their way homewards rather tired, but nevertheless very pleased with the dav'g outing-
WAIOXGOXA. A dance in aid of tile children's excursion fund was held in the schoolroom last Friday evening. The attendance was' rather poor, but an enjoyable evening was spent. Miss G. Hine supplied the musical programme. Our public library is to benefit considerably as a result of the Government subsidy received recently, and it is to be hoped the institution will receive even better support than during last year. The school committee has decided to spend £4 on the children's school library in purchasing a cupboard and additional books. Euchre parties are shortly to be recommenced under the management of the recently-elected dance committee. These were most successful last year, and should prove, remunerative if well supported.
