S.S. MANUKAU.

The Waitara Mail reports that on Thursday morning the s.s. Tainui was used in an endeavor to pull the stranded Manuk.au off into deep water, but tile attempt was unsuccessful. The spring tides were not as high as usual owing to the prevalence of south-easterly winds. An unfortunate incident was the breaking of the tow line just ■ when a move was being got out of the vessel at the top of high water. By the time the rope was attached agiain the tide had commenced to ebb. It was decided to have one more attempt at high water. This time the vessel was shifted, and she towed very nicely for about fifteen minutes, when the edge of the channel was reached. Here, one or two rollers were experienced, and one bigger than the others got underneath the vessel, tipping her right over. Captain Berg, who was on board the .vessel, had to rush across the deck up to his waist in water to release the line which the Tainui pulled by, and four others on the Manukau, with the captain, scrambled into the small boat. The stranded vessel then went over on her side, smashing the casks attached to her as she did so. She lies now on her side, and can be reached easily at low water. It is considered that the vessel being on her side and get-at-able is in a far better position. The hole which has so freely let in the Water is disclosed, and it is proposed to patch it up with canvas, so that at high tide, after the pumping out is accomplished, the hull will float.
