At the Magistrate's Court to-day Mrs. Peters, licensee of Tattersall's Hotel, was fined £2 with costs on a charge of obtaining the services of a barman without first making application to the secretary of the Hotel Employees' Union to supply her with a worker. Henry Thomas Andrews, licensee of the Southern Hotel, w,as fined £2 with costs on a similar charge. HOLDING AN RACE MEETING. Timaru, Last Night. The farmers around Beaconsfield village have been accustomed for some years to hold a mixed sports meeting in a paddock on Boxing Days, the sports including some gallops and trots for local horses, the prizes being provided by sweepstakes. The race* were not advertised, but it had become an understood thing that there would be horse races, and to-day two of the managers of the last sports were prosecuted under the Act of 1909 for holding an illegal race meeting. For the defence it was contended that this was a sports meeting not a race meeting, and that there was nothing more in the races than if the men agreed to try their horses in reaching the same point across the paddock. Mr. Day, S.M., referred to the Little River case and convicted the defendants, but imposed no penalty beyond THE LAND HUNGER. Timaru, Last Night. Over 200 applicants for the 26 lots in the sub-division of the Sherwood Downs run were examined to-day for the ballot to-morrovr. NEW CARGO STEAMERS FOR UNION STEAMSHIP COMPANY. Dunedin, Last Night. The Union Steamship Company has received advice that the new cargo steamer Kaitoa was launched on Tuesday. The new vessel is about the size of the Whangape, its tonnage being 2750. She is expected to sail in a few weeks, and after discharging railway material at Fremantle will load at Bunbury for New Zealand ports. The other cargo steamer being built for the company is nearly completed and may be launched any day. She will be similar to" the Kaitoa and will be named the Karamea. THE DEARTH OF DOMESTICS. Dunedin, Last Night. The dearth of the supply of domestic servants has led to steps being taken locally to overcome the difficulty. A meeting to form a society for the promotion of the immigration of domestic helps was held this afternoon and was attended by about 50 ladies. After the position had been explained it was decided to form a society for the purpose mentioned. The names of 32 ladies willing to join were handed in. Lady MacLean was appointed president. CHAPMAN-ALEXANDER MISSION. I Dunedin, Last Night. At the Chapman-Alexander Mission meeting to-night Dr. Chapman an-, nounced that arrangements had been made to extend the mission here from the 31st inet till April 14th. This has been rendered possible by cancelling the Cnnstchurch mission, but the missioners have agreed to spend three weeks there later on. SUCCESSFUL GARDEN FETE. Wanganui, Last Night. A garden fete in aid of the Beautification Society's funds was held to-day in glorious weather. When everything is settled the society will receive £650.1 Excellent as this result is, it would have been much larger had not two postponements on account of the weather been necessitated. J
