A MOUNTAINEERING FEAT. ' By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. Mr. S. Turner advises from the Hermitage that he successfully ascended Mount Sefton under winter conditions, a difficult climb,.and obtained many fine photographs from the summit. NEW BRIDGE FOR WANGANUI. Wanganui, Last Night. The ceremony of driving the first pile of the new bridge over the Wanganui river took place to-day. The bridge is to be of ferro-concrete and will cost £20,000. NATIONAL SERVICE LEAGUE. Palmerston N., Last Night. Mr. Robert McNab has received an invitation from the National Service League, of which Lord Roberts is the president, asking him to undertake a campaign throughout England in the interests of universal service. Captain Kielson, organising secretary, states that the League is organising a special campaign amongst the working men of England, and refers to the work done by Mr. McNab during his visit to England and the defence campaign which he conducted in New Zealand as the reasons for making it desirable that he should undertake the new mission Mr. McNab is replying that circumstances make it inconvenient for him to accept the honour done him. s JW,C.p\U. CONFERENCE. Dunedin, Last Night. At the W.C.T.U. Convention this afternoon the following resolution was passed: "This convention urges all unions to secure better education of girls in domestic instruction." It was also decided that the union set up a department of domestic science. It was reported that the expenditure in 1911 was £3453, exclusive of the organising fund.

SPORTS PROTECTION LEAGUE. Westport, Last Night. At a large and representative meeting to-night, after an address by Mr. W. Paape, secretary, a branch of the Sports Protection League was formed at Westport, with' officers representing all branches of local sport. Feeling reference was made to the deprivation last year of the Westport Jockey Club oi its only totalisator permit.
