Perfect weather conditions prevailed for the annual meeting of the Opunake Racing Club yesterday, and this drew a| large crowd to the coastal club's course at Pihama. Motor-cars, drags and horse-drawn vehicles 'of all kinds were utilised' to convey country patrons to the meeting. A feature of the hor&e paddock was the array of motor-cars, last year's record being easily beaten. The country club, of which Mr. G. W., Rogers is the energetic secretary, have| made great improvements to, the course | and its appointments, and on all sides could be heard praise of the excellent management. The racing was good. Mr. I A. Morse, who controlled the barrier, 1 got his fields well away, though on some I occasions they were large, and one of the horses was as usual,inclined to be fractious. Mr. W. V. Young, in the judge's box, had some very close finishes to decide, but proved equal to the task. During the day the sum of £7782 was passed through the totalisator, ?.-, against £5550 last year.
