CONCILIATION COUNCIL.
SITTING AT NEW PLYMOUTH. A sitting of the Conciliation Council was held in the Town Hall yesterday morning, before of the Northern and Taranalti Industrial districts, to consider the carpenters' and joiners' dispute. The assessors were:— [For the union: Ivor Hazell, Newtown, Wellington, carpenter; George Blatherick, Wellington, carpenter; Charles D. Arnold, New Plymouth, carpenter. For the respondents (the Taranaki Master Builders' Association): Wm. P. Brooking, John W. Boon, and Fred A. Coleman, i builders, New Plymouth. Notices of the dispute were filed on March 4 and sent out on March 11. The representatives of the Master Builders' Association applied for a month's adjournment, on the grounds that those members of their association living in outlying districts had not had sufficient time to prepare their case. This was opposed by the union assessors, who contended that ample time had been afforded them. Considerable discussion took place, but eventually, on the employers' assessors stating that if the adjournment asked for were granted they were prepared to recommend that wages which might be agreed upon in reference to the dispute should be payable as from April 1, the union representatives withdrew their opposition. The Commissioner then adjourned the hearing of the dispute to April 15.
