WORKERS' DWELLINGS
PALMERSTON EXPERIENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmereton N., Monday. A good deal of delay has occurred in connection with the scheme to establish a settlement at Terrace End by the Advances to \yorkers Department. Intimation has now been received that the authorities are prepared to commence building, but the assurance has come so late and under such circums;tances that it is likely that most, if not all, the prospective householders will withdraw from their engagements. A disappointing feature of the affair is that the estimates have turned out to be nowhere near the actual cost of the buildings. The experience of one local resident illustrates the inconvenience to which people have been put. In June last he applied - for a fourroomed house to be erected on a section 60ft by 145 ft, and waa told by the authorities that the cost of the building Would be £285, to which had to be added £75 for the section, and a few pounds for administrative expenses. The applicant paid his 1 deposit of £lO, and now the department ha* intimated that the cost of the four-roomed dwelling would be £374, and total, including land and expenses, £458 7s.
