EMPIRE PICTURE PALACE

A GREAT ST. PATRICK'S DAY ATTRACTION. ' "THE COLLEEN BAWN." ! It is a' hopeful sign amid the exigencies and temptations of the picture track that the American producers i should pause in their headlong rush for gain to add something of a more enduring nature to their account, and that there is still existent a desire to excel, not to be stifled by trade combinations. The past year has furnished several examples of exceptional effort, which the Empire Picture management has duly placed before the New Plymouth public. At the Empire Theatre to-day another great production will be unreeled, which at this time may justly be termed the "chef' d'oeuvre" of American motion picture production, "The Colleen- Bawn," in three reels of 1000 ft., 'by the famous , Kalem Company. The pictured story [follows very closely the drama of Boucicault, with the exception that in a numjlfer of instances the picture portrays I evente to which the dialogue merely lalludes. In these instances the picture tells the story with great clearness. [Then, too, the scope of the camera picture is at all times greater than the I stage picture. The events follow each i other through the three reels in such jclose and logical sequence that the absence of the dialogue is scarcely noticeable. This condition could not be obin a picture of shorter length. The picture is produced on Irish soil, in the exact location described in the original play, to secure which the Kalem players made a special trip to the Emerald Isle. _ It is certain this magnificent film will draw enormous crowds to the Empire, and the management has displayed keen foresight and an up-to-date knowledge of the world's film market in securing this attraction for St. Patrick's Bay. In addition to the star [item there will be a'complete change of [programme, with every item new to the New Plymouth public.
