LOCAL GOVERNMENT BIL

AFFECT ON RIVER BOARDS.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Friday. The proposals embodied in the Local Government Bill are viewed with alarm by some members of the Hutt River Boa»d. Under the Bill all river boards will be abolished and their powers be vested in the provincial councils. The chairman 'of the Hutt Board explained that the river would be controlled by a body in Wellington. Ratepayers would prefer it to be controlled by men of local knowledge. The only way the board could get out, of the difficulty would be to amalgamate with the Borough Council, which is not affected under* the new scheme. To do this it would be necessary to have a Bill passed by Parliament. The board agreed to communicate with all river boards in the Dominion, asking them to join in a protest against the proposals.
