DISTRICT NEWS.

HURFORD ROAD. Last Friday the annual school picnie was held in Mr, G. Spence's paddock. The weather broke rather wintry in the. morning, but cleared up nicely by the time one thought of getting ready for an outing. Both adults and children amitsed themselves with a lengthy programme of foot races. The results of the children's races are too lengthy for publication. The adult events resulted as follows:—Married ladies' race, Mrs. H. Loveridge 1, Mrs.. Wadsworth 2, Mrs. Smith 3. Single ladies' race, Miss. L. Smith 1, Miss Myers 2. Married men's race, W. Adlam 1, 0. Wadsworth and G. Spence (dead heat) 2. In running off, Mr. Wadsworth won. After all the children had won a prize and indulged in a lollie scramble, all retired to partake of the good things on, the table. In the evening a dance was held in the schoolroom, which proved a greater success than'was expected, as it was only decided in the afternoon to hold the dance. During the interval between the dances songs were rendered by Messrs R. Spence, Adlam, Thompson and Fenton, which added to the enjoyment of all. Music was supplied by Messrs George, Fenton and Thompson, Mr. Fenton also officiating as M.C, Things were kept merry until midnight, when all retired after having what one would call "a good time." ' We have the Omata Dairy Co.'s suppliers' picnic to look forward to on the 21st inst. in Mr. 0. Duke's paddock. All are invited, ladies providing food and crockery. We have been startled by slight mishaps on our road lately. Mr. W. Thompson had a colt which broke its leg while he was handling it the other day. Other accidents that might have proved worse are reported. The backband of harness, in one case, broke and brought the horse down, and, later, another farmer had an undesirable experience through the breeching breaking while coming clown Chant's hill with an extra load of milk on. Mr. Williams, of the Omata store, had a shaft of his vehicle broken when coming down the factory hill. Mr. 0. Jensen had the bad luck to forget his trap lamps when he went into Wirth's Circus, and when returning home was espied by a wellknown figure, and had his name taken, which resulted in a fine.
