BOROUGH COUNCIL.
LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last evening. Members present were the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne) and Councillors J. Clarke, H. Stocker, W. Ambury, T. Buxton, J. Buttimore, J. G. Hartnell, H. Jackson, J. Kibby, H. J. Gilbert, J. C. Morey, J. T. Mannix. Attention was called by the Rev. S. S. Osborne to the condition of the footpath on the north side of Gilbert street, where it abuts on Liaiilet street, and part of which is under water in wet weather, owing to it being lower thah the foad. According to the writer, as 'the Council received about £IOO in [rates per annum from the street it was [surely not expecting too much that a part of this sum should be spent on it.
It was decided to refer the matter to the Estimates Committee for favorable consideration.
Mr. G. H. Maunder, secretary of the IjO.G.T. Building Committee, asked the Council if it had any use for about 50 or 60 cubic yards of earth, which would be available when the enlargements to the Good Templars' Hall were put in hand. Mr. Maunder is to be informed that the Council has no objection to the efirth being tipped over the bank on the west side of Carrington road, the wc/rk to be done to the satisfaction "of the borough engineer.
The Council decided to accept the offer of Mr. J. H. Bayley to extend the term of the sanitary contract to March 31, 1013.
The borough inspector was instructed to supply the Inspector of Noxious Weeds with a list of sections within the borough on which fennel is growing. Subject to certain conditions, Mr. F. Pinson wrote permitting filling in Molesworth street east to encroach on his property.
Councillors decided to merely "receive" a petition presented against the construction of a public convenience in Brougham street.
The custodian of the Carnegie Library was granted two weeks' holiday on full pay.
A petition was received from a number of ratepayers asking Ihat kerbing, channelling and other work in Hine street, be put in hand.—lt was decided to refer the matter to the Estimates Committee for favorable consideration, and to ask the borough engineer to submit an estimate of the cost of the work.
The borough engineer was also instructed to prepare estimates of the cost per chain of wooden kerbing for footpaths, and the cost of painting the Henui bridge and handrails. So as to enable the executive committee to readjust the charges as from April 1 next, instructions were issued to the borough engineer to report on the different water motors in tlie"town, the number of hours each motor is used, the horse-power and the quantity of water consumed bv each motor.
On the motion of the Mayor, the borough engineer was instructed to submit an estimate of the cost of completing Powderham street bridge, together with a separate estimate of the completion of one side of the structure, the cost of kerbing and channelling to be shown separately.
The reports of the borough engineer, electrical engineer and abattoir manager were read and received.
Cr. Buxton's name was added to the committee set up to report lujion the reorganisation 8f the electrical staff.
