BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY REPORTS. Reports as follow will be presented at to-night's meeting of tlie New Plymouth Borough Council:— ELECTRIC LIGHTING. Mr. H." Black (electrical engineer) reports as follows: Private Lighting, Fitzroy.—The line in Manpirei road has been completed, Mid several poles (have been erected in Rimu street, but as we have mot yet received any 25ft poles, we have not been able to complete this line. Poles have been erected and wires run in Kowhai street, and one house connected. _ Two poles are wanted for a connection in Karamu street, which is ready. Poles are still wanted for McLean street, but we have not yet been advised that any house in this locality is ready to be connected. No work has yet been done in Sackville street, owing to want of poles. Holds worthy Road, Vogeltown. This work was authorised in September last, and poles were erected some time back, but up to the present we have received no notice of any house being j-eady for connecting, although we have received a number of applications, and I believe that ( some houses are being wired.

Street Light, Fitzroy. Some of the wires required for this work have, been run, and several lamps erected. The remainder of the wires and lamps will be erected as we can get them, but we have been kept particularly busy of late with extensions, and have not been able to get this work done as quickly as Would like.

Wires and Cables.—lt is quite t' ■ that some wires and cables were dered, if we wish to be ready for further extensions of distributing lines.' ,Plant Extensions.—Tail-race: The first section of the' tail-race has now been completed. A start has just been made on the scond section recently authorised. The contractor for crushing metal has just started carting the boulders to the crusher site, so we should be able to proceed more quickly with the excavation of the race now that there is more room to work.

Pipe Line.—During the past fortnight most of the men have been employed on this work, and a good deal of the excavating on the hillside has been got out. Forebay.—The foreman for this work took up his duties on Tuesday last, and a start has been made on the excavation. The valves for the forebay were to be shipped in January, and should arrive about the ihi<idle of th§ month. Drawings of some of the valves are to hand, and complete drawings of forebay ironwork are expected by next mail. Machinery, etc.—The material for the pipe line has been delayed, and the latest advice is that it was to be shipped on February 20, so t}iatit Aiannot arrive until near the end of April. ~Advice is now to hand that the alternator is due in Wellington, and, th,Q turbine .is due there about 'the middle of the month. The exciter and the switchboard were expected to be shipped on the 14th ihst. Plans of the switchboards are now I to hand.

Expenditure.—The cost of the above works to date is as follows:—rTail race, £744 10s; pipe line, £3l 4s; forebay, £77 15s 9d. During, ths .past month ten men have been engaged ,on the above work. ; ''

WORKS COMMITTEE. ; Recommendations of the Works Committee are as follow Mr.- A. E. Wilson to permit the filling in. Molesworth street east to encroach on his property be accepted on terms of his letter; that His Worship the Mayor and Crs. Mannix, Gilbert .and Morey be appointed a committee to confer, with the St. Aubvn Town Board tyith reference to the proposed forming and metalling of Outfield road; that the borough inspector be instructed to report upon all premises within the brick area where receptacles are provided burning rubbish; that Messrs. Sladden and Palmer be informed that the Council have agreed that the metalling at the suggested new street at Mitchinson's Gardens shall be 14 feet wide; that the letter from Messrs. H. T. Joll and others re tarring footpath at Strandon 'be referred to the borough engineer with power to accede to the application provided the vote is not exceeded; that the tenders received for the annual supplies be referred to the borougli engineer to schedule and report; that Ronald H. Baily be appointed clerk in the town clerk's office, subject to the conditions attaching to the appointment; that the borough engineer be instructed to report upon the question of improving Dawson street between Devon street and Powderham street; that a footway 4in. high and 4ft. wide be constructed at Devon road, Fitzroy, from opposite Mr., Richardson's property to the pillar-box; that the Council approves of plan of the area near Moturoa proposed to be added to the borough; that the 4in. water main in Kowhai street, Fitzroy, be extended at an estimated cost of £33; that the borough engineer be authorised to lay the following sewers: Powderham street, from Mt. Edgecombe street to Outfield street (estimated cost £104), Gill street (£4o)', Octavius place ( £7'2),' Hobson street ( £40); that, as recommended by the borough engineer, G. B. Hooker be granted the sum of £3 10s for the extra work, apart from his duty as clerk, performed by him.

ELECTRIC LIGHT COMMITTEE. The Electric Light Committee recommends that the electrical engineer be authorised to call for tenders for poles in lots of 50, minimum tender to be taken 100, maximum 400, a penalty to be fixed for late delivery, the conditions of tender to be approved by the chairman; that the electrical engineer be authorised to obtain quotations for a supply of wire and cables; that the application of the Taranaki County Council for a street light at the east end of the Waiwakaiho bridge be granted on the usual terms; that the recommendation of the electrical engineer that the residence of a member of his staff be connected to the telephone system be referred to the Elec-' trie Light Reorganisation Committee to report upnn. ENGINEER'S REPORT.

Hie borough Engineer (Mr. Skitrop) reports on street works that have been attended to during the month, footpaths that have been tarred and sanded) and sewers laid.
