A FATAL AVALANCHE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 10, 5.5 p.m. New York, March 9i A gang of men clearing a snowslide from the tracks of the Rio Grand Southern railway were overwhelmed by an avalanche. Five were killed and many injured. The tracks have been blocked by heavy avalanches several times previously. > A ROYAL FUNCTION. Received 11, 1.15 a.m. London, March 10. The King and Queen and the Prince of Wales laid the foundation stone of the County Hall on the south side of the Thames. It was a great function, the Agents-General and their wives being present. THE FEDERAL CAPITAL. Received 11, 1.15 a.m. Melbourne, March 10. The Federal Government is erecting new Commonwealth offices at a cost of £40,000, which is considered a sign that it is in hurry to remove the capital into New South Wales. THE LOONGANA WRECKED. Received 11, 1.15 a.m. Sydney. March 10. The captain and crew of the barque Loongana have arrived in Sydney. They report that the vessel was totally wrecked on the Gilbert Group in January when bound from Sydney to Gilbert Island, with a cargo of coal. She struck a reef and a large hole was torn in her bottom.
