WAITARA NEWS.
(From Qur Own Correspondent.) The New Zealand & African Steamship Company's Somerset arrived in the roadstead on. Monday morning from Dunedin. She completed loading by Tuesday evening's tide, and sailed for Wanganui. The following cargo was shippied for West of England ports: 2789 quarters beef, 68 pieces beef, 2508 carcases mutton, 5767 carcases lamb, and 79 casks tallow. The next steamer due here is the New Zealand Shipping Company's Otaki, on the 18th. The contractors for the new bridge over the Waitara river hope to be able to make a start in about a fortnight. A portion of . the material is already on the ground. Fat stock is still plentiful in the district, and a large quantity is still being put through the local works. There is at present a scarcity of empty houses in the town, and several enquiries are being made by would-be occupiers. "The Haymakers," a secular contata, is to be produced on April 1 and 2, under the conductorship of Mr. J. H. Wingate. The proceeds are to be handed to the Waitara Volunteer Fire Brigade.
