MAIN SOUTH ROAD.
OAONTJI. About 15 ratepayers were present at th« meeting held in the Town Hall, on Friday evening. Tie chairman Tead the financial position of the ridings, and'in placing the position before those present spoke of the absolute necessity of improving the roads and the insufficiency of the present rate to maintain the roads. A point brought under discussion at this meeting, which did not appeal to the southern end of the district, was the erection of a toll-gate. It was pointed out that sufficient revenue could be obtained from a toll-gate to practically pay Rahotu's (northern) share of interest on a £40,000 loan. # The discussion went on the general lines that most of the settlers' leases would be up in a couple of years, and it would be to the interests of all to await that period before supporting any loan proposals. A resolution was proposed and carried that the ratepayers in the Oaonui district are satisfied to continue under the present rating conditions.
