COOKE RELEASED. NO DESIRE TO VINDICTIVELY PRESS THE ACT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The_ Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward), who is also Minister of Defence, announced to-day that Cabinet had decided to release young Cooke, of Christchurch, from gaol, where he was serving a sentence of fourteen days. "This has been done with the concurrence of the Commandant (General Godley)," explained Sir Joseph Ward. "The Act having been affirmed on a second occasion, there was no desire to vindictively press it further. Cooke will therefore be released at once." APPOINTMENTS AND CHANGES. Wellington, Last Night. Col. A. W. Robin, Adjutant .General, is appointed to temporarily represent the Dominion at headquarters of the Imperial General Staff, War Office, London, in accordance with the agreement entered into by the overseas Dominions at the recent Imperial Conference, that each should send a senior officer as its • representative. Lieut.-001. Wolfe is to be Ad-jutant-General, owing to Colonel Robin's absence. Lieut.-Col. "Abbott will succeed Lieut.-Col. Wolfe in command of the Auckland military district. These changes will date from June 20th next.
The following appointments will take effect from July 10th next:—Lieat.-Col. Bauchop, to command Otago military district; Lieut.-Col. Smyth, now officer commanding Otago, to the command of the Canterbury district, vice Lieut.-Col. Hawkins, deceased.
