THE WINDOW SMASHERS
OUTLAWS WHO. DISOBGANISE SOCIETY. SENTENCED TO HARD LABOR. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, March 5. Mrs. Pethick Lawrence, addressing the Women's Political Union, said that now private property had been attacked, the public, in its own interest, would be compelled to coerce the Government. Miss Pankhurst defended the wrecking of the windows of innocent tradesmen on the ground that no elector was innocent of Friday's method. There were insufficient women to terrorise the whole of the male community. The magistrates are sentencing the suffragettes whp broke windows to hard labor, including Dr. Louisa Garret Anderson, of Harley street. The sentences are being received with applause in the courts. Dr. Anderson received a sentence of six weeks, and many others two months. The Daily Mail, hitherto a supporter of the suffragettes, says that the- Government can no longer permit society to be disorganised by a few outlaws who have declared war on social order. Recent events have destroyed their cause in Parliament, where anti-suffragettcs are in the ascendant.
