TURF TOPICS. \ (By "Moturoa"") Very large acceptances are carded for J tke opening day of the Danuevirke meeting, which takes place to-day and to-' morrow. If a fair percentagn of the horses accepted for go to the post the fields will he about the largest seen out at any of the smaller meetings'. Twentyeight horses remain in the* Trial Stakes; twenty-one in the Cup, twenty-six in the Hack Welter, and eighteen in the Tamaki Welter. Winners promise to be very hard to pick, though after Wanganui form Golden Loop, Miseal, Matlow, Bonnie Boy, Topic and others will be well supported. A Napier paper reports that Julian has broken down.
Invader has been scratched for all engagements at Dannevirke. Blood-poisoning, as the result of an accident received while running in a paddock at Waihi, ended the days of Clemora recently. The son of St. Clements won many sprint events along the , coast, and was very fast up to a mile. The Chasseur mare Kiwitalii has gone into C. Jackson's stable at Hawera. Recent winners over sticks at> Caulfield were Home Rule and Sea Dog (by Castashore). Both horses were very modef' ate performers in New Zealand. Sublime, who ran so prominently in the chief events at Gisborne, has been brought down for the Dannevirke meeting, and will be ridden by E. Lowe in «the Cup. ( Gay Lawless has been retired to the ! stud. ,
Golden Loop was heavily backed each j start at Wanganui, but he was too slow j to find his feet to have a, chance. The chestnut is in great form and should get amongst the winners soon. C. Emmerson has been engaged to ride him' at Danne'virke. ' , ■ Bonnie Boy ran two great races last week, and 1 " is evidently a cut" above the average. Had his jockey not let Fashion Plate up on the rails at the turn a double victory might have gone to his credit at
Wanganui. Lady Moutoa was well supported for the Flying at Wanganui, and ran well considering the indifferent start. On the second day the public let her go out at a long price, and there'were many angry people when the Foxton mare landed the Autumn Handicap. She was ridden by young Watson, who learnt his riding in the Karamu stable'.
The "sugar" was in on St. Gate in the Matarawa Hack Handicap, and after the big bay had shaken off Lady Volga at the.distanee it looked all over. St. Gate finished strongly under pressure, but a few strides from the post Deeley brought Aloha up with a great run and he won by almost a length. Lady' Volga is very speedy and should win good races when more seasoned. She is a three-year-old brown -filly by Vladimar—Merrie England mare, and is trained by T. Coleman at Wanganui.
Bracketed horses contested three races at Wanganui on Saturday, and each time one of the coupled pairs landed the mus- 1 tard. Needless to aay the public made ; them favorites. With two dividends | offering in two of the races a punter had four chances of winning, and y*t soihe ; I people say they preferred the bookmaker (and one chance of winning! Royal Scotch ran the race of his life on Saturday, and at the finish of the Jackson Stakes was galloping oyer Erittengarde, who won by a neck. The sturdy son of Royal Artillery was conceding the two-year-old 25lbs, and his performance was highly meritorious. The clock read lmin 13sec—a New Zealand record.
Oyer one t thousand pounds stood against Reumae's nam« when the tote | closed down on the Fordell Hurdles. Euroco set a merry pace, and when Reumac, who was running second to the. bend, began to tire, the wise ones ,set up a howl. Then Leolanter came to light and joined Euraco at the distance. Euroco came across the course to meet him and bored into the chestnut, but without avail, Leolanter winning by a neck. The stewards let Coleman, the rider of Euroco, down lightly with a caution. Of course, he made a mistake in leaving the rails in the first place, but his subsequent aetion was awful, and all the more glaring that it took place right under the very noses of the stewards. The Newmarket Handicap at FlemingtoH oa Saturday say the well-backed three-year-old Desire (Chiron—Ambition) score after a fine race. The New Zealand horse Obsono was in charge at the distance, but the weight told in the final stages of the race, and he could only finish fourth. The time recorded was three-quarters of a second clower than that put up by Ermengarde the same day at Wanganui, where the course was all against fast time. Starting off the ssec mark, the New Plymouth trotter Clive won the Brighton Handicap (two miles) at Christchurch on Saturday in 4min 54 2-ssec. Clive is evidently a greatly improved horse. After his good showing in the Open Hurdles on Thursday, Darby Paul was reckoned well in in the Okoia Hack Hurdles with ftet lOlbs, and crowds of Taranaki punters ,put their money in The two sons of St. Paul—Darby'Panl and Sandy Paul-had the finish to themselves, and both paid good priies mainly owing to the solid support accorded to Seaman and Allure.' The latter was ridden by F. Flynn, and was reported to be the pea," and punters swallowed the bait!
Shining Star is very .groggy in his pms, and was only started on the first day at Wanganm. Piriwai behaved wretchedly at the post each day, once being left altogether, and twice standing on the mark until the rest of the field had got a break of a dozen lengths. Piriwai upsets every start she lines up for, and her place is not on a racecourse. , Byron was one of the hottest favorites sent out at the meeting, but is no good in the ram and did well to run sedand'ih the Farewell Handicap. The big-footed Bootle was out in front all the wa/vfand like many of his breed fairly reveiled in the sloppy going. Claude Brown was substituted for Jenkins on Midnight Sun the second day and the horse ran kindly for a change, and nearly landed the Wanganm Stakes. His run from the head of the straight was a brilliant one, and he was only a neck to the bad when Dearest reached the winning post. Had the brown colt run up to form in the Cup he would have been second or third without a doubt
