URUTI. .' ! {Turn Our Own Correspondents). I On Wednesday last a circus visited ' here. It was the first time there had ) been a -circus here, and there was a fairly j good audience, despite the weather con-1 ditions, which no doubt kept many away. On Thursday, the 29th, the Uruti Athletic Club held their annual meeting. The weather was very unfavorable. It rained heavily in the morning, but clear--1 ed up in time for a good many people to attend. About 4 o'clock it commenced to pour, and people were seeking shelter anywhere. It was a great pity to see the light costumes of the ladjes and j children wet arid muddy. Some of them must have been ruined, as the ground was fairly soft before the rain came down § to make matters worse. The booth, in charge of Mrs. Telfar, did well. All the [■events were got off in good time, without a hitch, thanks to the able and energetic officials and committee. The results were as follows:—Maiden Race: M. Wickham 1, Roach 2.220 yds Hurdle Race: G. Bertrand 1, J. Slight 2, C. March 3. 100 yds Handicap: G. Bertrand (4yds) 1, T. W. Taylor (9yds) 2, 1 D. Morey (7yds) 3. With the continued showers we are experiencing this season, it seems as if settlers are not going to get burns this year. There must be acres and acres' of fallen bush unburnt in the bush districts of Taranaki, which means a set-back to the bush farmejr.'
The milk supply at the local factory is diminishing now, but there is plenty of feed for stock.
Some of the back ,roads are in a bad »tate, and the metalling oh the main road will progress very slowly if it does not keep fine for a while.
KOKU. A storm of unusual force was experienced here on Sunday last. It was of the hard dry nature that we usually get when Egmont warns us of the approaching winter. Its effect on the pasture and cows was easily visible next day. It blew the branch of a bluegum through the roof of Mr. McAuley's house over one of the bedrooms, and remained swaying to and fro all night. The trustees of the hall held a meeting on Monday night to consider the best means of liquidating the' debt on the hall. No business was done, and the meeting .was postponed until Wednesday night.
The scheme of Cr. MeAllum to electrify the South road has been widely discussed and approved of as the only means of enabling the County Council to maintain the road; or, as an alternative, the Government to construct a railway parallel with the road. The latter scheme would be considered-the- better in the interests of the country at large.
