NEW ZEALAND'S BISLEY.
GOOD SHOOTING CONTINUES. | | ATKINSON LEADING FOR THE AGGREGATE. J By Telegraph—Press Association. ' 1 Trentham, Last Night. ; I The serious business on the Trentham J j rifle meeting, so far as the majority of ' the competitors are concerned, commenced this morning with the first match ' of the championship series. There was a tricky south-east breeze, which upset the calculations of the shooters, as it carried nasty eddies. The Auckland Match, at 300 and 500 yards, 10 shots, was first taken. At ike 300 yds range, Elliot (Akarana A), j a tyro, took little notice of the wind • and put up a possible. Duthie (Christ--1 church) got 49, and Atkinson (Auckland), Needlmm (Linton) put on 48 each, and there were 47's in plenty. When the men started at 500y/ls the general shooting conditions had improved, and the marksmen did good work on the whole. Elliot immediately found the bullseye and put on four consecutively; his next was a 4, then he got a 5, followed by a 4 and three bulls. This gave him the remarkable total of 98 in the match, only j two off the possible, and secured him 1 certain victory. All interest in the I match thereafter dropped away. Mcln-, tosh (Dunedin City Guards) scored the possible at this range. There were three 93's, a 92 and five 9Ps. After lunch the Wellington Match, 500 and '6ooyds, 10 shots, was started, and at the former range possibles were put up by R. King (Opaki) and Potter (Auckland). Wilkie and McLachlan' (Petone), Hill (Taranaki), and C. Clarke (Rangitikei) each made 49, and ther >' } were many 48's. At '6ooyds the fluctuating wind spoilt several promising scores. Potter (Auckland), who made the possible at 500 yds, got 44, which gave him a total of 94. King only got 39 at the 600 yds range, which put him out of the running. Tay- ] lor (Blenheim), who had put up 46 at 500 yds, scored two short of the possible here, and heat Potter for first place. Atkinson, by his 93 here, placed him- " self at the top of the aggregate, scoring 186 to Elliot's 182.
