A cable from Ottawa reports death of the Hon. Edward Blake. A London cablegram announces that the Earl of Carrington has been created a Marquis. Mr. E. P. Hemingway, proprietor of the Patea Press, who has been spending the week-end at New Plymouth, returns to Patea by the mail train this morning. The Rev. H. Sharp was farewclled at a gathering of members of the Queen street Primitive Methodist Church on Friday, and presented with a Mosgiel travelling rug. Captain M. P. Hankey has been appointed secretary of the Committee of Imperial Defence, in succession to KearAdmiral Sir Charles l Ottley, who has become managing director of the Elswick Works.
A Press" Association telegram frbm Feilding states that Mr. W. J. B. Trewin, an ex-Mayor of Feilding, who had served a term of four consecutive years, died /suddenly 'on Saturday morning from heart disease. He was a solicitor by profession.
Mr. S. Buick, who is well-known throughout Taranaki as an ardent worker in the cause of the Salvation Army, is leaving on Friday evening to visit his parents at Kangeroo Island, near Adelaide, South Australia. He expects to bea way about three months. Mr. Claude S. Jewell, who is relinquishing the position he has held for two years of sub-editor of this paper, in order to fill the 'editorial chair of the Auckland Observer, was on Saturday presented- by the staff with several volumes of poetic works, handsomely bound. Mr. Jewell, who will take with him the good wishes of his many friends, leaves for Auckland ,by this evening's steamer. Mr. W. H. Herries, M.P., accompanied by Mrs. Herries, will leave Wellington by the lonic on March 21 for a trip to the Old) Country. 'Mr. Herries will spend about a fortnight in England, and return to New Zealand early in July. Mrs. Herries, who has lately been in indifferent health, will remain in England for ft longer period, and may be rejoined there by her husband before she returns.
Mr. Wm. Hoskin is leaving for-Eng-land on Tuesday morning. For some time past Mr. Hoskin has been in the employ of Messrs. S. B. White and Sons as window dresser. Opportunity was taken of his departure to show the esteem in which he was held by his employers and fellow workers. The firm presented Mr. H'oskin with a New Sealand travelling rug and the staff with a Gladstone bag. Mr. H. C. Field, C.E., died at his residence, Wanganui, last week at the good old age of 83 years. He was born in Hampshire, and in 1845 took a position in the railway service, continuing till, 1851, when he came to New Zealand in the ship Simla. On arrival he was appointed clerk and engineer to the Wafcganui Town Board, and subsequently became engineer to two road boards and consulting engineer to the Eangitikei Road Board. When Mr. Field retired, in 1884, he had constructed under various local bodies over 2000 miles of road, including "Field's Track" to Karioi, explored and surveyed by him. Mr. Field was a man of deep learning and wide knowledge, and he contributed largely to the columns of the press. He was the author of "Ferns of New Zealand" (an illustrated book published in 1890), and other scientific subjects. The deceased was for some years a director of the Wanganui Chronicle, and was prominently associated with many local societies. Among his sons was Mr. W. H. Field ex-member for Otalri. '
