PERSONAL.

Archdeacon Walsh arrived by the Rarawa from Onehunga yesterday morning. We are pleased to be able to report that Mrs. W. Sole, sen., is making good progress. Mr. Alfred Crooke, S.M., has been appointed Registrar of the Supreme Court at New Plymouth, vice Mr. H. S. Fitzherbert, deceased. Mr. P. J. Nathan has consented to allow himself to be nominated as a candidate for the Palmerston North Mayoralty at the elections next month.—Pal-' merston telegram. Mr. Chiney Suggate, M.1.C.E., the wellknown North Island engineer,, is now in New Plymouth making an exhaustive examination of the gas works in view of reporting upon their capability for supplying the requirements of the town. Mr. Hubert Mitchell, for many years a member of the literary staff of the Lyttelton Times, has temporarily abandoned journalism to go "on tour." He arrived in New Plymouth yesterday to make arrangements for the opening of Miss Marie Baine's season next, week.

Mr. W. J. Chaney, chief postmaster at Napier, retires on March 31st, after 36 years' service in the Post and Telegraph Department in New Zealand and seven years in the British Post and Telegraph Department. Mr. Chaney entered the Department at Wellington on April 25th, 1876. *He intends settling in New Plymouth, where he was for several years Chief Postmaster.

Mr. George C&ttiro, the touring manager for Von Arx, the magician, and his great American company of vaudeville artists, arrived in New Plymouth yesterday to complete arrangements- for'tlie appearance of the organisation here on Monday, March 11. Mr. Cathro was round here twice about this time iast year, ahead of Miss Nellie Stewai't, and later as advance manager, for the Plim-mer-Denniston Company. A cablegram has been received from London by Sir Joseph Ward informing him that the, health of Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P., Mayor of Wellington, is improving. He is undergoing special treatment and' examination by Dr. William Arbuthnot Lane, a noted, specialist, who will decide to-day whether an operation is necessary. Dr. Lane is surgeon to Guy's Hospital and senior surgeon to the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond street. He is the author of numerous' papers on surgery and anatomy and books on operative treatment.
