NOTES ON THE MEBTING. OLLIVER DOES THE HAT-TRICK. By Telegraph—By "Moturoa." Wanganui, Last Night. The racing was keen and exciting for the opening day of the meeting. Taranaki horses had a good innings, Red Lupin, Ineuru and Cornelian winning races. Red Lupin paid the largest dividend of the day. The favorite Bronze won the Cup comfortably in fast time, and Gipsy Belle's victory in the Flying Handicap was made easy by a flying start, the others straggling off slowly. The racing opened with the Stewards' Handicap, Jargon and St. Felix being favorites. Red Lupin got ite the front soon after the start, and although headed by Sea Queen before reaching the straight, came again and won easily. Nukuatu, Ineuru and Dirge were the best backed in the Petre Hack Handicap. Ineuru hopped out first, and won all the ■ way in a common canter. Punters went for Waiputere and Captain in the Westmere Hurdles. Captain was in front from start to finish, and was never troubled. Xavier was pulled up, and Captain Bell stumbled and lost his rider after going half a mile. The public wisely selected Seaman, Cornelian and Bismarck as the best in I

the Hack Hurdles. Stevens made the< early running, but Cornelian took the lead half a mile from home and lasted long enough to win by the narrowest margin. Bismarck finished fast third and Sandy Paul fourth. Goodwin Park was the only withdrawal from the Cup. Bronze was a firm favorite, with Domino and Undecided next best backed. Kauroa set a solid pace for twelve furlongs, followed by Uhlando and Merrivonia. Bronze took the lead at the turn and won very easily from Dearest, Domino and Undecided, Lady Menschikoff and Uhlando finished next, and Midnight Sun was almost last. Olliver rode the winner, bringing off the "hat-trick" in the last three Wanganul) I Cups. j

Sanguinary was slightly better fancied than Styx for the Juvenile Handicap, but Styx won all the way.

For the Wiritoa ' Handicap backers favored Matlow, Master Tupuhi and Lady Kileheran. Manawakaha was chopped out soon after the 6tart, and Grandee led to the turn. There was a great race home between Matlow and Bonnie Boy, the latter winning by a head. Minora was never prominent. The Plying Handicap was a great betting race. Boanerges was most in demand, Watt's bracketed pair and Gipsy Belle next. A straggling Hart saw Gipsy Belle and Booth out with a, big lead. [Gipsy Belle won nicely from the fastfinishing Koyal Scotch, Byron and Overtime being next. Ngatiruanui and Piri- , wai played up at the post, and were | badly left. This was the only bad start of the day, the rest being splendid.
