A cable from Jamaica reports the death of Sir Alexr. Taylor, the last survivor of the British party which successfully . assaulted Delhi.

The condition 'of Mrs. W. Sole, sen., of New Plymouth, who had the misfortune to break her thigh at Hunterville on Saturday, is very precarious, according to a wire received in.town yesterday afternoon..... Mrs. Sole is 79 years of age.

Mr. R. Masters, who was elected as representative of the West Ward on the Taranaki Education Board, vice Mr. A. Cargill, took his seat for the first tune yesterday, and was formally welcomed by the chairman (Mr. H. Trimble). Leave of absence was granted to the following teachers by the Education Board last night:—Miss Riordan, assistant, Waitara; Mrs. MeCartie, sole teacher, Kohuratahi; Miss Rowntree, assistant, Centra], Miss Handerson, assistant, Ureniii.

The following resignations were accepted at. yesterday's meeting of the Education Board:—Miss Rowntree, assistant, Central; Miss C. Haddrell, assistant, Inglewood; Mies D. Cumberworth, assistant, Lepperton; Miss Martelli, assistant, Pohokura; Miss Bicheno, sole teacher,. Uruti. Master Howard Mackie,, son of Mr. Geo. Mackie, of Waitara, who has been a probationer teacher for the past 18 months at the West End School, is leaving for Wellington on Saturday to take up his studies at the Training College. His record as a scholar is worth recording. He passed Standard VI. and gained a junior scholarship at 12 years; gained a senior, scholarship at 14; passed matriculation at 15; gained Dr. Fookes' Cup for general excellence at High School at 16; passed teachers' D certificate at 17; and partial pass C at 18.

, Mr. W. St. G. Douglas, Chief Postmaster at Dunedin, will retire from the postal service at the end of March on three months' leave of absence. After having been several years in a mercantile office Mr. Douglas entered the accountants' branch of the Telegraph Department, Wellington, as a clerk, in March 1869. Mr. Douglas is thus retiring after fortythree years' service. He can lay claim to two records. He has been an officer iu charge since he was twenty-one years of age, and during all those years he has never once been off duty on sick leave. Mr. Douglas was brought up in New Plymouth.
