STRIKE OF FIREMEN
REPLACED BY VOLUNTEERS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Adelaide, February 26. The firemen on all the perniament staffs throughout the State have struck. The board has made arrangements to roan three appliances with volunteers. The metropolitan station and the suburban stations have been proportionally provided. The volunteers were subjected to a hostile demonstration. The strikers are picketing the stations, which the police are guarding. Four alarms were received, and the volunteers responded well. All proved false alarms. The Fire Brigade Board ordered the managers of all places of public entertainment to appoint men from their staffs to attend to the fire appliances. Business firms regard the situation as serious, as in the event of a big outbreak it would be impossible, with, the depleted staffs, to cope with the fire.
VOLUNTEERS ABLE TO CARRY ON.
Received 27, Dlo a.m. Adelaide, February 26. The fire brigades' strike remains un settled. Both sides are finn.
The Fire Brigades Board reports there are plenty of volunteers offering. Applicants approaching the stations were accosted by ex-firemen pickets, and many were induced to change their mind 9. A movement is afoot for the Mayors of the city and suburban boroughs to mediate, as the Government will have nothing to do with the matter beyond giving its moral support. The Board, which is confident of its ability to carry on, will afford the necessary protection to property. The City Council discussed the situation, and negatived a resolution condemning the Board for locking out the firemen.
