CRICKET,
POHOKURA v. PUBLIC WORKS. On Saturday last a cricket match was played on the Stratford A. and P. showground between teams representing Pohokura and the Public Works Department. The "Works" were a bit too handy with the ball, and won by five wickets. The highest scores were made by D. Twohill (33 not out) for the Public Works, and Robinson (33) for Pohokura, whilst Willson also contributed a good 1 26 to the winners' score. Twohill had the excellent averages of seven wickets for 27 and two for 4 in the first and second innings respectively, and in the second innings McKenzie got two for 4. For the losers Rogers took seven for 28 and Nelson two for 4 in the first innings. Details:— POHOKURA. First Innings. Robinson, b Twohill . •• R. Downey, has received promises of over thirty •special prizes.- • The show will probably be held in' July, about the time of the New Plymouth winter show.
THE EGMONT CLUB The following report is to be presented to the second annual meeting of the Egmont Club, to be held on Tuesday evening:—ln presenting the second annual report, I have the pleasure in congratulating the members on the phenomenal success that has attended the club. The membership of the club has increased during the year from 98 to 147. The past year has been a particularly momentous one in the history of the club. As the member© will remember, at the annual meeting held last year, a scheme for the financing of the new building was brought down and approved. The committee were empowered to take such steps to give effect to the proposals as they thought necessary. Prior, however, to launching the scheme an offer was received of £3OO for half | the section held in trust for the club. This was accepted, and at once cased the way for the new building. As the half section on which it was proposed to erect the new club building was free from liability, it became an easy matter to arrange finance with any outside individual or institution. It was arranged with the club's bankers for an overdraft, to be guaranteed by members of the club. Seven gentlemen were approached, and agreed to become guarantors. The next matter was the issuing of debentures, and, I am pleased to say, the response far exceeded the expectations of the committee, and that now 775 debentures have been allotted. There remains a balance of 225 to be allotted. I may say that the practical interest taken by members of the club has enabled the committee to erect the new building and comfortably furnish the same at a total approximate cost of £1550. The club moved in the new building on 11th January, and the official opening took place on Bth February, 1912. To be clear of any liability or loss of rent in connection with the lease of the old premises, which has three years to run from Ist July next, the committee thought it advisable to accept the offer of £SO for the goodwill of same. During the year the club was registered under the "Incorporated Societies Act,
1008." In view of the fact that the
club is working on an overdraft, I strongly urge the members to kindly keep their debenture calls paid up. I take this opportunity of thanking all those gentlemen who have taken such a lively interest in the erection and furnishing of the new building and also the ladies who so kindly and bountifully provided refreshments and 1 helped to make the opening ceremony such a huge success. The thanks of the club are due to the steward, Mr. Dwyer, for the satisfactory manner in which he has carried out his dutiee. , I

GENERAL HEWS The Primitive Methodist Church harvest festival services will be held on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th. Mr. Boyes, of Messrs. Masters and Son's staff, received the sad news this morning of the death of his mother at Motueka. i Messrs. C. Jackson and C. Speck, members of the Stratford Defence Rifle Club, leave to-morrow (Tuesday) for Wellington, and 1 will try their luck at Trentham. May they 'land" the blue riband of Trentham, is the worst wish I send with them. Visitors to His Majesty's Pictures on Saturday night had a treat in "13m Battle." A marvellous piece of stagecraft, wonderfully produced and illuminated by the fine cinematograph, it was a triumph. Mme. Bernard puts on the best, and puts it on beet, too. A big "Star" is being' procured for the opening of the dress circle in a fortnight's time, and 1 there are many constellations booked for twice-weekly changes 'twixt then and now. Mr. C. Sanders, of the Warwick road, leaves shortly on a tour of America. The arrangements for the Primitive Methodist garden party in Mr. Sanders' beautiful grounds on Thursday are well] advanced. There ought to be a big at- ] tendance. The Hev. Harrison and Mr. J. Masters I leave on Wednesday for Auckland to at-! tend the Methodist Conference. A local business man missed his bike this morning. He was mad about it, too, for he had to walk home to lunch and back. Inquiring of a cycle agent, he_ found it had been left.there for repairs. A friend had taken it away instead of his own! His astonishment when he found he had ordered 1 repairs to an alien wheel wa» worth beholding,
