DRUNKEN SAILORS' MELEE.
SENIOR-SERGEANT DART INJURED. By Telegraph—Press Aaeotiation. Timaru, Last Night. Chas. Dunn, an A.B. of H.M.S. Pioneer, was yesterday fined' £2 or in default three days' imprisonment for drunkenness and obscene language in the streets. He was also convicted on a charge of assaulting the police. This was the outcome of a melee, ia which two police officers, Senior-Sergeant Dart and Constable Fulton, were, badly mauled, especially the former, by a number of drunken man-of-warsmen,' assisted by some town hoodlums. The police were unable to identify the others. The magistrate said that he had made the penalty light, as the man would be dealtjwith further aboard ship. The magistrate said that the men were allowed a certain amount of liberty ashore, but must conform to the civil laws. r
