THE SUGAR INQUIRY.

ALLEGED DEPLORABLE CONDITIONS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, February 24. Giving evidence before the Sugar Commission, the secretary of the Sugarworkers' Union said that the working conditions were deplorable. Some employees in the sugar works worked in a semi-nude and others in an absolutely nude state. Bad effects, caused by the terrific heat and the sudden changes to a lower temperature, developed rheumatism, influenza and bad teeth.. Those who started as boys never reached maturity, and if they worked for any length of time they were unfitted for other work. They seldom lived to an old age.
