BIG RAILWAY UNDERTAKING
THE TRANS-CONTINEXTAL LINE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, February 24. The first practical step towards constructing the transcontin«ntal railway has been taken by the Federal Government. Tenders have been called for 135,000 tons of steel rails.
Mr. O'Malley claims that it is the biggest railway job in the world. The line will cover 1063 miles and be carried out by day labor. Eighteen hundred men will be required. Asked what preference would be extended to English manufacturers, he said that outside Australia tenders would be called for only in England. This should indicate the Government's intention.
