LAWN TENNIS.
TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. The Taranaki Tennis Tournament was' commenced on Thursday at Waverlcy in mivthing but idea tennis weather. A iliM'oncerting nor'-wester blew cold and r;r,., with hardly a respite throughout the day. The very fine state of the courts, however, helped to redeem the unfavorable nature of the weather. The old croquet courts, which have now been requisitioned for tennis, making six courts in all, played remarkably well, which speaks volumes for the amount of attention they have received of late at the hands of the committee. Players were present from New Plymouth, Hawera, Patea and Wanganui. The New Plymouth contingent comprises Messrs. Nicholson, Stocker. Webster and Griffiths and Misses Brewster, Thomson (2), of the New Plymouth Club, and Messrs. Sole and Ambury (2), of the Fitzrov Club. Results:— FIRST DAY.
