The following interesting item is taken from a recent Home paper;—" The ailence of more than half a century was broken recently, when the closed and •buttered rooms of Lockleys, the Georgian mansion which was the home of the late Mr. George K Dering, F.R.S., the 'hermit' of Welwyn, were thrown open for a sale of the treasures of the old house. Two rooms had- been closed for nearly 60 years. One was a small room on the left hand of the hall, the other was a large bedroom on the first floor. When preparations were being mad» for the sale the sealed lower room wa» first opened. It was exactly as Mr. Bering's father—a great early Victorian sportsman—had left it when he went to the hunt for the last time." A question that should be answered definitely (says a southern paper) relates to the value of pinus insignia as a timber tree. Iu its natural home in the United States this pine is stunted and ragged, but in New Zealand at any rate it has shown its ability to produce a tall, "clean" trunk, and planks cut from it have been used in farm buildings with satisfactory results. The tree can be sent to the sawmill 40 years after the peed ia planted, and its remarkably rapid growth gives it an enormous advantage over the recognised timber trees. One who has studied the growing of trees in Canterbury more closely probably than any other person, has a firm faith in the virtues of pinus insignis, and if his theory on the subjeet is sound, the province ought to be arranging to supply itself with all the rough timber it will need in the years to come.
