THE TEAM FOR ENGLAND. NO REPLY FROM DISGRUNTLED SIX. THREE OTHERS CHOSEN. By Cable—Pre» Association—Copyright. | Received 22, 5.20 p.m. Sydney, February 22. The six players have failed to accept. Gregory, Hazlitt and McLaren have been selected to replace Trumper, Armstrong and Cotter. The other selections remain in abeyance. STILL UNSETTLED. PLAYERS BACKING DOWN . I THE BOARD STANDS FIRM. " Received 22, 9.30 p.m. Sydney, February 22. During the early part of the day, the Premier (Mr. McGowen) and Warner fruitlessly tried to secure a settlement of the cricket trouble. Hill, having only received his invitation on Saturday, has ten days from then to consider the position. The other five accepted, but reserved the right to withdraw if anything arose prior to the departure of the team rendering such withdrawal necessary. The Board of Control insisted on a, definite and unqualified acceptance. i Ransford's place will be filled to- j morrow. Carkeek now becomes first wicket-keeper in place of Carter. Webster, of South Australia, will probably be chosen as second wicket-keeper. It is expected that 'Hill will decide to stand by the other malcontents.
The following ten certainties wp-" 1 - chosen some time ago:—Trumper, Hill, Armstrong, Cotter, Carter, Ransford, Bardsley, Minnett, Carkeek and Hordern. Of these ten, the first six have declined to go unless the team were allowed to appoint its own manager. Dr. Hordern is unable to make the trip. Bardsley, Minnett and Carkeek have accepted, so that with the three cabled as above there are six certainties. The Board of Control has decided to send 14 or 15 players. Consequently there are still eight or nine places to fill. The firm attitude adopted by the Board of Control is having its effect,'as the malcontents are wavering. If they climb down unreservedly at once there is still time for their inclusion, otherwise some younger players will be given the trip. This will make Gregory's eighth trip Home. He made his first trip in 1890, 22 years ago, when he was only 20 years old, and he will be 42 in April.
