DISTRICT NEWS.

WAREA. (From Our Own Correepondent.) The local athletic club holds its annual sports next week, February 28, and judging by the nominations received the sports should be a splendid success, if we are only favored with, fine weather. A committee meeting of the Warea Athletic Club was held in the hall on Monday evening. The president (Mr. James Simpson) presided over a fair attendance. Various details in connection with the forthcoming sports were arranged. It was decided to hold a working bee to procure blocks for the chopping and sawing events, syid Messrs. J. A. Clarke, C. Muir and J. Simpson' were ' appointed a block committee. Officials were appointed as follows:—Gatekeepers, Messrs T. E. Larking and J. E. Gordon; judge, Mr. M. Hill, in place of Mr. G. P. Jones, who is in the hospital; result official, Mr. J. A. Olarke; bellman, Mr. Ben Warner; marksman steward, Mr. E. Julian; post entry official, Mr. J. Simpson; sheep guessing, Mr. T. Julian, sen.; ball committee, Messrs. R. Julian, J. A. Clarke, J. Simpson, W. B. Clarke, A. E. Magon, and 11. Pelham; ground committee, Messrs. H. Pelham, C. Muir, W. B. Clarke and J. A. Clarke. Mr. Corbett's tender was accepted for the refreshment booth. The committee's colors will be blue and white, A gold brooch will be procured for the ladies' race, and Messrs. Ducker Bros, are to be asked to supply orchestral music for the dance. Mr. G. P. Jones, who has for some time been ill in the New Plymouth hospital, is, it is pleasing to chronicle, progressing as well as can be expected. The school children's, annual picnic took place in the local domain on Thursday last. The day was fine, the rain ■"»hich threatened fortunately holding of until the evening., A pleasant dav was spent in races and games, the children and their parents all enjoying themselves. A dance was held in the hall in the evening, and in spite of pouring rain a fair number travelled long distances to it.
