NEW ZEALAND CAMPIONSHIP MEETING. ~ SHIELD ANNEXED BY SOUTHLAND. By Telegraph—Press Association, lnvercargill, Last Night. The weather was more than disappointing for the New Zealand championships athletic meeting,' being cold and '• boisterous, with frequent drenching • showers. It was a day of surprises, and the crowning surprise was Southland eventually winning the shield with 34 points, Canterbury 26, Auckland 20, Wellington 18, and Otago 14. The following are the championship results:— 100 Yards Fiat Championship (Present champion, R. Opie, Canterbury).—R. E. Egglestone (Otago) 1, R. Opie (Canterbury) 2, R. L. Christie (Southland); 3. At the 50 yards mark Opie and Egglee- • tone were abreast, but the latter forged ahead and won on the last stride by three or four incheß. Christie was two feet behind Opie. The champion did not appear to be in his best form. Time, 110 3-fisec.
Half-mile Flat; winner to hold th» Hooper Challenge Cup for one year (Present champion, W. G. Harding, Wellington).—A. W. Dormer (Auckland) 1, C. S. Thomas (Canterbury) 2. Also started: T. R. Robertson (Southland), Bryno (Wellington), A. Mac Donald (Southland), T. Seddon (Southland). . Won by Ave yards, with eight yards between second and third. Time, 2min 5 4-ssec. Pole Vault (present chamipon, L. McKay, Wellington).-r-G. Gillies (South" land) 9ft 9in, 1; <J. Batstone (Canterbury) 9ft sin, 2. L. McKay, the champion, was far from well, as his ankle was troubling him, and he seemed to feel the cold very keenly and was obviously stiff. He could not negotiate the 9ft 6in jump, which Giller cleared beautifully. Three Mile Walk (Present champion, H. E. Kerr, Wellington). D. Cashman (Wellington) 1, H. E. Kerr (Wellington)
2. These were the only starters. They were abreast until the last lap, when Cashman went out and beat the champion by a good eight yardß. Time, 22min 120 Yards Hrudles (Preserif'champion, G. P. Ateo started: M. Dickson (Canterbury). From the start Hill's stride led him to i the front, and he never lost his place. I Pugh ran an excellent race, but finished 125 yards behind the champion. R Mitchell (Otago) 19ft 3y 4 in, 3.. Also competed: S. Batston (Canterbury) and C. E. Robertson (Southland). Competitors ■•emed to have some difficulty in picking up the board at the start, and Keddell, until he made his winning jump, did not appear to be anybody in particular. In his third effort, however, he measured bis distance better and made a jump which was amply good enough-for the company he was in. Throwing 161b Hammer (holder, A. Bissett, Wellington).—M. Robinson and Robertson tied for second place, but in the jump off th» Canterbury man cleared the bar at sf» lin.
One Mile Walk (holder, H. E. Kerr, Wellington).—H. E. Kerr (Wellington) 1, D. Cashman (Wellington) 2, A. B. Buchanan (Otago) 3. • Also started: P. King (Southland.) The Otago man went to the front at the start, but was quickly overhauled by the champion. King dropped out before the first lap was completed. Although Cashman challenged often, Kerr went out in the'last lap and won by 30. yards with Buchanan, a long way behind. Time, flmin 42 2-ssec. Hop, Step and Jump (holder, L. McKay, Wellington).— F. Hazlett (Southland) 42ft 6in, 1; P. Harvey (Canter--42ft ' 2; L ' McK& y (Wellington) 41ft 6in, 3. Also competed: F. Cook (Canterbury), C. Robertson (Southland), P. Chamberlain (Southland), W. Thorn- - son (Southland), and M. P.' Pool (Wellington). The champion, McKav, who was suffering from an injured leg, only attempted one jump. Hazlett won on his last jump. Three Mile Mat (holder, G. N. Hill N. Hill (Auckland) 1, M. Dickson (Canterbury) 2, J. Beatson (Otago) 3. Also started: :G. G Nottman (Otago), C. W. Frv (Otago), T. R. Robertson (Southland) and C. 11. Pugh (Wellington). The three placed men and Fry were the only ones to finish. Hill always kept the field well in hand, and sprinting away in the last lap won by 40 yards, with Beatson ten yards away. Time, 15min 52 l-sseo. 440 Yards Flat (holder, R. Opie, Canterbury).—Dormer (Auckland) 1, J. Wilton (Wellington) 2, J. A. Mac Donald (Southland) 3. Also started: C. S. Thomas (Canterbury). From a good start, Wilton showed the wav to the straight, where Dormer went to. th» front and won by V/ 3 yards. Time, 63 4-ssec. 440 Yards Hurdles (holder, G. P. Keddell, Southland).—F. Cook (Canterbury) 1, G. P. Keddeli (Southland) 2. Also started: R. F. Mitchell (Otago), P. Harvey (Canterbury), C. Robertson (South- ■ land). Against a head wind, Keddeli ~~ could make little progress. He was certainly faster than Cook over the jump* and was almost on the leader at the last hurdle, but Cook raced away in the straight and won by four yards. Time, 68 l-ssec.
