THE INGLEWOOD FIRE.
NARROW ESCAPE OF A BLOCK. , The Record gives further details of' 1 * the fire at Inglewood on Tuesday night. It eays:—lt was owing to"the invariable ' rule of Mr, Young, in charge of Messrs. Nicholls and Son's bakery, to go, last thing of all, to see that everything was right, that the fire was discovered when it was, ae in going down the entrance way he saw the glare on the window of Mr. Kennedy's work room, and at once streaked" for the firebell, which quickly brought the brigade on the scene, and the magnificent water pressure did the rest. Although everything in Kennedy's was reduced to unrecognisable ashes, and a large portion of the ceiling was burnt through, giving entrance to the grocery department of Nicholls and Son, the firj was stayed. The grocery and ironmongery, however, suffered very severe- » ly from smoke and water, and of course * the drapery and millinery also suffered S smoke. The water, however, did not g reach it in any very serious quantity, though it did to a slight extent in tie dressmaking department, jit was no doubt to the beating effect of the water pressure, and the fact that the wind was blowing frem the west, that the whole . block is not now a simple heap of ashes, as there was every other element necesrv for- a huge conflagration in the posi- * Won.
