Mr. A. Crook* has been appointed permanent Stipendiary Magistrate at New Plymouth. Mr. W. A. Parkinson left Hawera yesterday morning to catch the Tainui at Wellington to-day, on a brief visit to England.

Miss Olive Haddrell, M.A., leaves by the Rarawa on Friday evening to take up an appointment at the Auckland College and Grammar .School.

Lord Islington was last night initiated into the membership of the Loyal Kilbiriiie Lodge, Manchester Unity, Independent Order of Oddfellows. The death is announced, in a Press Association cable message, received yesterday morning, of Mr. Albert Bythesea Weigall, M.A., headmaster of the Sydney Grammar School since 1860.

Mr Alex. M'Minn, the well-known journalist, who has for some time past been on the staff of the Manawatu Standard, has accepted a position on the stein* of the Auckland Star.

j Mr. Justic Sim will preside over the Supreme Court sittings at New Plymouth on March 5. Arbitration Court business will be taken on March C, and the Supreme Court sittings will be resumed on March 7.

A Napier telegram reports that the Harbor Board resolved to engage Mr. T. W. Keele, Commissioner of the Sydney Harbor Trust, arid Mr. E. A. Cullen, of Brisbane, to report on the inner harbor proposal and the maintenance of the ehannel.

For the Senior Civil Service examinations the following officers of the local money order and savings bank staff were successful:— Mr. C. McGiveH (full pass), Mr. A. M. Robertson (five subjects, completing his pass), and-Mr. G. E. Dinniss (two subjects).

Among the visitors from Lodge Ara to New Plymouth is Mr. George Patterson, an old Taranaki boy, who is revisiting the town of his birth after an absence of 14 years. He notices many improvements and has enjoyed exchanging . reminiscenses with several old identities.

Mr. A. E. Penwarden, butter maker at the Mangorei dairy factory, who is leaving next week on a trip to Australia, under instructions from his medical adviser, was entertained by his fellow employees on Tuesday evening, when opportunity was taken to wish him bon voyage and a speedy recovery.

The members of the Avenue Road Card Club recent met at their club room for the purpose o£ bidding farewell to their pact captain (Mr. W. Richards), who is leaving for Gisborne. During the early part, of the evening cards were played, after which the president of the club (Mr. E. Sole) presented Mr. W. Richards with a handsome and wellequipped shaving companion.
