In the Arbitration ease the secretary •f the Melbourne Tramway Company ■aid that the company did not approve of unions, and had several times endeavored to prevent their formation. ftfr. Badger declared that he thought it necessary to prevent the men wearing badge*, because on Eight Hours Day those not wearing them were subjected to abuse. The President of th» Court directed witness to obtain the documents necessary to prove the validity of his action in forbidding a man to wear what he ohose. Witless: We claim the common law »ght. The President: What next? It is a common law right for every man to dress as he chooses. Mr. Badger said that in the interests of peace he had a right to prohibit the wearing of an emblem that would subject non-wearers to abuse. He admitted that it was bow the practice •f the company to ask new men not to join the Australian Tramways Association. He did not object to the local ■■ion. Che ease has been adjourned. Received 21, 12.30 a.m. Melbourne, February 20. Ii the arbitration case Mr. Badger —twiitted a telegram showing that the Brisbane tram service was in full swin" and that 350 men are available. Seventy nor« are under instruction. Further evidence was submitted that ft* train men not wearing badges were objected to abuse.
