DISTRICT NEWS.
TIKORANGI.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Governor's Speech is the theme of ' much conversation, and the opinion" is generally expressed that it may.' be termed a death-bed repentance. The suggestion that a speedier, and more.vigor-., ous native land , policy is needed, and, that it may be expected cabinet •* of which the Hon. Sir James Carroll iai* a leading light, would surely cause a smile to flit over the face of a wooden idol. It may be the environment of a' Conservative district, but I cannot but ' think that the ethical position of the ' Government is aptly described in the old distich, "When the devil was sick the Devil a monk would be, but when the Devil was well the Devil a monk was he." The all-day picnic in connection with the Anglican Church is to be held in Mri'-J R. F. Lye's grounds on March 7. Luncheon and tea are to be provided, and an effort is being made to get a cricket team out from New Plymouth to play" the local team. Side shows, such as nail-driving, sheep-guessing, cocoanut shies, etc., will all help to make up an enjoyable day. 'ft
Cricket seems to have taken.' on again~ in this district, and .old, hands' recall thci.-j days in the later' seventies and early eighties when the Tikorangi eleven wa's' ;j , one to be reckoned with, and their favor-,, ite journey used to be to Pukearuhe to,* play the A.C. eleven. There were some * gay- lads in the old constabulary force,V and to them the world was ialways,y young. But those rollicking easy days, ' when all were poor and all were happy, - have gone beyond recall, as also, alas! " have some who were the lifo and soul 0f,.; many a hard-fought match, and to those '■[ that are left a remembrance of those _; days of yore inspires mingled feelings of* pleasure, sadness and regret. ,7 Mr. Walter Crump, an old and ' spectod settler of this district, but now« residing at Fitzroy, is, I regret to hear, 3 sjill very seriously ill, and his condition,} is causing his friends grave anxiety.
